Doc,
I pronounce Uday as oo day, but I'm not sure if that is the correct Slovakian pronunciation. Uri took about a week or so to get used to his name. I never called him Grind, only Uri, so he learned quickly to associate the word when I called him. Uday will be as quick to adapt if you choose to give him a new name.
I use mostly Czech and Slovak commands (which are very similar). I use one German command with my pup and a few in English, but since I usually use hand signals with the commands, my pup will down in German and Czech. I think they really hear, "blah blah blah FOOD blah blah blah NO blah blah blah". . . :D
By the way, they have a sold banner on Uday now.

Lyn,
Your "herd" is beautiful! My wife just loves the color of Rex. Ceira is adorable and looks like she lives for a ball toss. Her name is very similar to my Keara - Ciera is Gaelic for "black" and Keara is Gaelic for "dark." Your matriarch reminds me of our female shepherd Anna that passed last year.
Thank you for sharing pictures, my wife and I got a kick out of the ones with your little girl and the dogs.

How nice to know someone who actually knows what Ceir means!! It was chosen because it was the gaelic word for black and when she was a pup she was very dark and I wanted an Irish name!!

The little girl is my cousins little girl. My own son is now 18!! But I love that my dogs are so good with small children. When I first got Rex my other cousin came to stay with his two little boys. I had never exposed Rex to small children so I was worried at how he would be. Silly me he was wonderful!! The little two year old was eating an icecream and there was this big GS sitting nicely in front of him watching him he never even considered helping himself. The two boys wore themselves out swimming with the dogs and they used Rex as a big pillow in front of the TV. It was amazing to watch.

These dogs re just incredible animals!!

I saw they added the sold to him it made me happy...

The troop is as I expected Lyn... I actually like the picture with you and Rex chilling together on the beach! He obviously loves mommy.

I actually like the name oo-day (UDAY), but I am a bit put off that Sadam's Son and mass murderer was of the same name...

So my family may have an issue with a GSD named Uday...

I like the Idea of naming him something Slovak or German, even European that translates to Dark or Black...

So many things to prepare.

So another question to you my friends:
Toys, and Work Equipment? Eurosport suggested I get a young dog sleeve?

When does he arrive? I like the name Uday (oo ay), but see what you mean. I was so excited when I went to the airport to pick up Rex (Guido). Take some hot dags with you to develop a long lasting friendship!!

Best of Luck with him he is a beauty!

Doc,
When Uri flew in to San Francisco, it was the worst weather in years. They actually shut down the airport for 4 hours due to high winds. My wife and I were so excited but Uri was obviously very nervous. But it all worked out just fine. I think Lyn is right, bring some hot dogs and make him happy after a long flight.

As for toys and sleeves. Fire hose tugs are great, bite sleeve or jute tugs help develop the prey drive, a couple of training balls (Orbee or similar) as a reward, and a larger ball (6-8inch) like a Jolly Ball (with a rope) are great. Sleeves are expensive but necessary for bite work. I use www.dogsportgear.com but there are other good suppliers back east. I also like the bite wedges (two handles inside and wedge is made of bite sleeve or jute material). They are quick and easy to use for a little fun training.

You are going to have a great time with your new buddy - the best thing is that you (like me) are going to learn right along with him.

Thanks! I just ordered all the stuff for UDay...

I got a vest, training toys (Balls, Rope Balls, and Dumb Bells), from eurosport equipment but they didn't give me any deals even for Law Enforcement, so I bought the sleeve and cover from another site...

So in short, I got the things I think I'll need, and now i just need Uday...

He should be here the 1st week of March, I asked for him to be held till then due to some modification I am making to the house right now...

Thanks for all!

He is home and these are the updates:

Week 1:
Day1)

Ok it was a horrible fiasco!

Customs wouldn't release the dog they said that the dog needed a Broker!!!! WTF!!!

I never even heard of a friggn' broker.. So I called around and it was a minimum of 3-4hounderd bucks to have one of these "Brokers" do some paperwork so I could get my dog...

So my wife put on her evil face and hat on and went to town on 'The US Customs', and after about an hour SHE WON!!!

We got Uday cleared and it was all behind us. We head for the Cargo Company and they gave us Uday.

1) Poor thing was he was crazy happy to be out of that create! he ran out and was like "where am I, what do i do..." I was there to help though with treats recommended by countless people...

2) We had all the family there, 8yr old, 2yr old, 6mo old, Me my Wife... and a sheet in our hands with a plethora of Slovak commands... AND TREATS

3) He pee'd like a race horse, then we ran up and down the grass together in heel for a heck of some time, then my wife took him to do a bit-o-bonding and walking...

4) The 2yr old was crazy happy, she and him hit it off quickly he after about 15 minutes layed down on the floor and became submissive to me and i had everyone come over and hold him down and pet him after which he rolled on the ground with her....

5) We drove home, I walked him again around the block, finally brought him in, and into his crate I had one ready that travel create may not make it around my house (Real ugly). He drank and eat a nice meal of Raw Meat, and loved it...

6) He's chill'n now in his crate watching us play Rock Band and enjoying his awesome blanky

7) just before that he and I played around wrestling in his cage... yeah it's a pretty big one, used to belong to my mastiff.

8) Whew i can finally relax my baby is home...

9) did I mention I hate customs!!!!!!

Oh and what the hell is a Broker? and why do they tell you you need one when you really dont? is there money being exchanged, perhaps???

Day2)

Moring…

So last night was an event... he did ok till about 2:00am when he didn't bark, but was making a whelping type sound, quickly I came to him and let him out... He was full of energy! Considering he is roughly on a time 7hrs ahead of ours... so it was 8:00am for him... I let him out and he Pooped, and we went back in for a few more hours... he barked a couple more times about every two hours till 6:30am when I decided to take him for a 1mile run... He did well, it was raining so we cut it off a 1mile, other wise it would have been a 3 mile run. My wife woke up now at 7:30 and decided to do some of her own bonding and took him for a second run.

He drank a ton of water...

Afternoon…
Well today was awesome... I actually took him on a that adventure in the morning and then in the afternoon the oldest boy and oldest girl and I wen to the park with Uday... He was pretty calm in every situation. Another set of kids came up and asked if they could touch him, the father looked scared and I said sure just one second, and demanded "Sad-nee" Uday sat down, and then I said "friend" and he let the little boy and girl come over with hand extended and then allowed them to pet him... Alway in siting position... then after I excused myself and we went to the other end of the park where we began to "Aporrrt" or retrieve a rope ball I bought from that website I sent you guys... I also had a Jute Toy for after... He retrieved perfectly with much vigor, and after 4 or five times, I pulled the jute Toy out and we began doing some aggression play! He locked on and I pulled him around and he held on like a helicopter blade.

We then walked to a smaller park on the way back home and while pushing my little one on the swing, I noticed a rock climbing wall made of wood with a very nice steep incline 75-80% and thought to test his Schutzhund Skills... So I had him "Sad-nee" then I yelled "Pusht" and as we ran toward the wall I yelled "Hop" and guess what? he scaled the darn thing!!! then I ran around the front of that jungle gym thing and said "Com-in-ye" and he ran down the slide! I shit you not it was the coolest thing in the world!!!!

it was all I could take in one day so I went home and gloated in my mind for a bit...

Day3)

Today Uday had an accident in the house! #1, my wife turned her head just for a minute and she heard the sound... Oh well, it can't all be honey and ice cream! :)

Day4)

Sheryl woke up to walk/run with Uday 6:00amish and she strapped a back pack on him, she said he responded well… no pulling to badly, he didn’t pee but did poop…

Then in a second when she turned her head he had an accident. Luck it was on the floor not rug…

I came down later and had a bit of fun with him on the patio. And we went for a walk too… I fed him his morning Rawness… Mmmmm…. And he chilled with me while I was doing house work

That is the journal of my Uday’s adventure thus far…

These were taken on the way back from the Vet today! I found a Holistic Slovak Vet 15 min from my house!!! LOL...

He said "Nothing needs to be done, This dog is better then you are probably."!

Week 2:

http://www.germanshepherds.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Board=30&Number=622290&Searchpage=1&Main=50191&Words=&topic=0&Search=true#Post622290

Week 3:
So as some of you know Uday is a Solvak GSD that joined my family March 7th, and since he has been home he has been great, but his obedience is less then expected. I have to scream every command before he finally gets IT! He also shows great control around not just my kids but any kids in general, it's the adults that he is beginning to tire of. This last week-end he was at a huge park with me and y family and he didn't really take to well to a larger Lab that was there, I tried introducing him and he didn't seem agitated till he got close enough then he jumped, it was like he was calculating and waiting... then BAM...

I tried a few times and finally the LAB just didn't want anything to do with Crazy Uday... I tied him up by the car in the shade and went to the other side of the building, a few min later I was being called by the others in the park! "Hey your dog is loose!!!" he was off the leash the had pulled the stake out of the ground! but he wasn't chasing a dog he was being chased by a 2.5lb Boston Terrier and was playing tag... He ran from her then he ran to her and she submitted quickly and he just rolled on her with his head... I've never seen that in a dog before but it made me happy, he was socializing with a dog... Later he would chase her and the other Boston Terrier around the field in what looked like a herding form... he would come when called in Slovak.

He did not get along with the Great Dane that was there either, she was quiet and came up to him to great him and he again didn't display aggression till she was close enough and then, BAM... man I was lucky to have had a short leash...

The next morning after our daily exercise (usally a 1 or 2 mile run, followed by retrieve of his favorite ball), we went to the place where others were, I wanted to say monin' and when the GD walked by he instantly was on alert, I corrected and commanded a lay down and stay command, and he did briefly but was still agitated, and got off the collar and chased the poor dog. i ran behind him and almost tackled him and put him instantly in a submissive position for a minute or two. he responded but it scared me... Nothing happened to the GD but a nice scare, again the chase was more of what i have seen herding dogs do before he chased her down and tried to nip at her hind legs...

Now... While at the beach with a friend who had been sitting with us for 5-6hours he was under my hang glider in the sade enjoying the ocean breeze and it was just a great day... when my buddy reach after all that time for a beer! Uday wasn't having it and when I commanded him to stand down he still had a vision lock on my buddy, wouldn't let him close to the beer or the baby that was now close to us too.

I later before I left on the leash had him sit and I had my buddy come back up to him with hand extended and he smelled it and licked it, I hope that was an apology...

Another incident at the park was that another buddy came into the RV to say hello and after inside and siting when uday walked by him he lunged at the guy, I yelled at my buddy not to put his arm up and Uday to stand his ground, but he still snapped at my buddies face...

He is getting exercise, he is getting love, he is 98% with house breaking, and he respects the kids, it's other dogs, and people that he is unpredictable with... He is 13mo. old, and Super Strong! He has great ball drive, and what I think is good prey drive too... he listens to me definitely but I sometimes have to repeat myself 4-5times gradually getting louder each time, he then submits but it's frustrating. My wife does OK with him, although all this unpredictable beahvior scared the crap out of her. We got him cause he was supposed to be highly trained, but he is a challenge... We all love him we just wish we understood him a lil better...

Thanks in advance for your opinions...

Doc, Is there a Schutzhund club in your area? It sounds like you need some help learning to reward good behavior & correct unwanted behavior.

BTW- guarding the beer is a good thing! :D

Doc,

I would get myself to a good trainer ASAP preferably one with sport dog training or personal protection training experience, before Uday takes over your household!! He should absolutley defer to you and not take matter into his own hands when it comes to others. Even if guarding the beer is a good thing!!(Ha).

When my eurosport dog came he was crate aggressive with other dogs who passed and dog aggressive with strange dogs. I corrected this behavior ASAP and he now ignores other dogs will say hi if I ask him to but I ususally don't as he really has no interest in playing with other dogs which is fine by me as he prefers to play with me. He now would not leave my side to go chase other dogs and does not growl or lunge when they come close just ignores.

I am sure by working with a good trainer Uday will become all that you want him to be and more. Keep us updated, I enjoyed reading your diary!!

warning

Postby tervgirl on Sun Mar 30, 2008 7:40 pm

I would strongly suggest getting a full health check of your dog upon arrival. Also have a WRITTEN agreement of health. If they won't provide that then move on and find a breeder that will. If they say they will do not believe them. Please get it in writing. My Dad purchased 2 dogs from Euro one male and one female. Is male is wonderful and he enjoys him very much. The female has had nothing but problems with her teeth and mouth. When he contacted them about it to let them know what was going on they did not even want to know about it. Her problems have gotten progressively worse over the past few months, even after surgery. They now include her whole jaw. After many consultations with different vets including a specialist, who is known for dealing with teeth problems all say it is genetic, it has been recommended they put her to sleep. They have also consulted two well known working dog breeders and judges who also say that it is a genetic problem. They have the x-rays and photos that show the problem. The first 9 teeth in her bottom jaw are gone and her jaw bone is deteriorating and within 6 months she will have no jaw bone. She will be very missed by all who have had the pleasure of knowing her. So please do all the research before buying from these people. My Dad has had dogs, show dogs and working dogs, for over 40 years. He has never had a breeder not want to know about dogs they have bred especially when it comes to health problems. Again it is a very sad day for everyone who has gotten to know Scarlet.
