How do you teach puppy not to eat the cat?

Postby condormom on Sun Jan 11, 2009 7:02 pm

Hello,
I have Condor, a 14 week old GSD puppy whose mom came from EuroSports (Gaba Top-Pas). He is an awesome dog. I would like him to be able to go through the house without worrying that as he grows older he will harm my cats.

Our current 3 year old GSD has to be on leash in the house or the cats have to be put up as he will try and grab them.

I would like the puppy to learn better. Right now, Condor will bark at the cats and chase them if they run. He did corner one and she hissed at him and he backed off.

This is my first GSD puppy, although I have been training with a Schutzhund club for two years. The cat thing seems to be a problem for all our club dogs.

So, any advice on how to get Condor to at least ignore the cats would be welcome.
thanks

We purchased Gandolf z Eurosportu and brought him into our home when his age of 4. At that time we had a 4 yr old cat and a 1 yr old cat. In the first few days of Grandi (Gandolf) arrival he chased the older cat a couple of times while outside. We immediately took control and placed him on down command. We did this each time he showed interest in this new "toy". Once he was brought into the house the same rules applied. He was not permitted to chase, bark or show aggression to the cats without being corrected. As time passed he quickly learned the cats were part of the family and everything worked out. The older cat still doesn't like him but it is more of an annoyance for the cat than the dog. The younger cat and Grandi now play cat and mouse and most days you will see them snifffing. pawing and enjoyng each others company. So I guess my point is, take control, teach boundries and enjoy the show.
